Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp

The Small Animal Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp is held annually in the spring at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, NY. It is an intense, small-group, hands-on workshop with a focus on ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks in dogs.

Participants have the opportunity to practice different regional anesthesia techniques – including blocks of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, the abdomen, and the thoracic wall – in a small-group setting under the guidance of skilled instructors. The use of ultrasonography for performing peripheral nerve blocks and fascial plane blocks will be taught; participants will then be able to perform these ultrasonographic approaches on canine cadavers and use dissections to learn more about the relationship between ultrasonographic anatomy and injection success.
Boot Camp hosts 30 veterinarians, including 10 residents, over two days. This RACE-accredited workshop is designed to serve as a ‘boot camp’ for veterinary anesthesiology residents (first-, second-, or third-year), board-certified specialists or clinicians who are interested in learning about regional anesthesia and practicing their skills in a unique setting with content experts.

The overarching goals for our workshop are to:
  • Teach standardized approaches to a variety of different ultrasound-guided regional anesthetic techniques;
  • Encourage basic science as well as clinical outcome research in this field;
  • Broaden the education and training of residents, anesthesia specialists, and veterinarians in this area;
  • Encourage the exchange of new information, ideas, and innovations concerning small animal regional anesthesia and analgesia.
