Money quote from the review article authored by Ferro-Novick and Jahn (here I have slightly adapted from the original text):
“Superficially, protein transport in yeast and synaptic vesicle release from nerve endings appear to be very different. One is constitutive, the other regulated by calcium, one occurs in seconds, the other within 200-300µs. Given such differences, it WAS reasonable to assume that the two processes would occur by different mechanisms and mediated by unrelated proteins. However, this is NOT the case”
