Personal Identity & Trust-building

July 7, 2021

For our second week with the teens we wanted to strengthen our collective agreements and move on to addressing their identities, how they perceive themselves and how others may perceive them as well. Teens were asked to fill out an identity wheel that listed different categories such as race, religion, age, gender and etc. We then talked about which parts we felt were most relevant or that we felt we were more aware of. Teens were able to get more vulnerable with each other as they spoke in breakout rooms.

We also brought in an example form current events using the current representation in Congress and how their lack of good diversity among the representatives means the lack of knowledge or representations towards issues that BIPOC face. We asked teens to think about how representation they’ve seen in the media, TV, films etc has effected the way they view themselves. This week gave us even more meaningful conversations to reflect on!

This week we also introduced our students to the final showcase and explained how thy would ultimately be working on an end project to share with friends, family and some of the staff at CCE

REMINDER: For the sake of keeping confidentiality with our teens and not violating the collective agreements, I will not be using their names or giving direct examples of what they spoke on during the meetings
