This week I visited Pink Houses to set and collect the August round of traps. On Wednesday, Kendra and Sammi from the other NYC CCE internship came with me to help set the traps and weed around the farm. I explained to them the process of setting the traps and the difference between pit and pan traps as well as and the types of insects I collect and count and why. We also noticed that the location of one of the pan traps had now been covered completely by the crops, so we decided to move it to a different location so it would be more in the sun. After counting and sorting the insects, I noticed that this month we had caught many more beneficial insects than previous months, and that the number of aphids caught had gone down from nearly 300 to only 2; a huge decrease!
