After getting sick of merely making infographics, I finally got into contact with my faculty mentor, a professor in the architecture school, to assist me in directing my focus towards the barn itself. First, he provided me with an architecture textbook that covered all the basics in sustainable buildings and construction. After reading through the textbook, I took the current blueprints of the barn and essentially “broke it down”. In other words, I analyzed the blueprints, taking note of what materials are used, the insulation that was decided, the natural vents in the building, and whether the building followed the rules of thumb of a sustainable building. I put all the information in a slideshow and presented it to my mentor. Then, we had an impactful conversation about what could be done to the building to make it more energy efficient.
