About the Project
This tick risk study, conducted in Onondaga County, is a collaboration between Cornell University and CCE Onondaga. We plan to sample about 50 sites around the county using tick drags. This year, we seek to obtain baseline data, determining tick density, prevalence of Lyme disease, and the best sites for future sampling. In 2025, pellet food distribution devices will be used to vaccinate mice populations against Lyme disease on residential properties.
Finding Ticks!
Tuesday, all of the other interns and I moved into the dorm building. It was great getting to meet everyone and learn about all the other projects! Wednesday, we had orientation at 8 AM where we took a tour of the station and went over logistics for the summer. The next day, our team decided to sample at Shackleton since we had luck there in the past finding ticks. Unfortunately, we were unable to find any, leading us to wonder whether we needed to change our collection methods. That Friday, though, we were finally able to find ticks! We had a successful day sampling at 4 sites. I am excited and hopeful to see if our luck continues next week.
