WoFo Global Café Conversation on Climate Change and Young Children

One of my field advisors, Richelle, shared with me this wonderful event that talk about climate change education for young children. I was very stunned to see educational practices that focus on children around the world, taking many different forms.

Here are some key reflections I had during this online session:

  1. Educators of climate change may not be well-equipped with the scientific knowledge. Educators need to keep their knowledgebase updated.
  2. To bridge temporal and geograhpical distancing, our teaching should be adapted to the immediate environmental experiences of the children taught.
  3. Aside from teaching young children the science of climate change, it is also important to increase connections with nature and an ethic of care toward nature.
  4. In many programs in areas with high vulnerability towards climate change, climate adaptation skills are also taught, including retrofitting buildings and horticultural information to cope with flooding or drought.
