Video of Model Building

Instructions

Test video from a 2015 group (unlisted, on YouTube, will be removed after class). Although it is provided in parts, you can combine yours into just 1 file.

Presentation

Because of Cornell’s classes going online as of April 6, your team will record an 8-minute video presentation of your research report.

Presentation Content

Your presentation should include content from your research report. These content areas include:

  • Introduction
  • Problem formulation
  • Very short description of the solution process used
  • Validation
  • Mesh convergence,
  • Important Results
  • Conclusions in terms of design recommendations

Slide Design

While the content of your presentation is derived from your team’s written report, your slides must be designed to deliver information in a primarily visual rather than textual form.

  • Avoid text-heavy slides
    • Drs. Nathans-Kelly and Nicometo suggest using sentence headers: “Instead of using fragments, or brief phrases, as the basis for your outline, challenge yourself to outline with complete thoughts. This sentence header acts as an executive summary for your learners” (taken from the slides under the Presentation Resources section below).
  • Use CRAP design principles
  • Complement textual content with appropriate and engaging visuals
  • Use icons to depict information visually: Flat Icon, Font Awesome, and the Noun Project are great resources

Slide & Presentation Format

  • Platform. Your team may use Google Slides, Keynote, PowerPoint, or another presentation software to create your slides.
  • Slides. Include a title slide with your team members’ names and the title of your talk.
  • Length. Your presentation will last eight (8) minutes.

Assignment of Speaking Order

Everyone should be prepared for all aspects of the report as the order of presentation within the group will be randomly assigned.

Presentation Resources

Suggestions & Resources for Recording the Presentation Video (for Spring 2020 semester)

First, decide whether it will be best/easiest to record your team’s presentation video synchronously or asynchronously. This decision might be based upon what technologies you have access to and what video editing skills you have. You may be familiar with some of these processes due to your experience with creating the model building video.

Recording Presentation Synchronously

If your team wants to record your presentation synchronously, using Zoom would probably work best. Zoom allows you to share your screen with your presentation slides. If the video is recorded to the cloud from Zoom, then it is automatically uploaded to Cornell’s Video on Demand website where the video can then be edited.

Recording Presentation Asynchronously

If your team wants to record each teammate’s segment separately, another software will perhaps work better. Each teammate will need to record their segment of the video, and then the videos will need to be edited together (see suggestions below under the Video Editing & Merging Software section).

Screen Capture Software

The following are free web platforms that allow you to record your screen with your presentation slides along with audio.

Video Merging & Editing Software

These platforms allow you to merge and edit videos. Some links are included to instructions on editing and creating videos.

Instructions for In-Class Presentations (suspended for Spring 2020 semester)

  • In addition to the suggestions you have had from Drs. Nathans-Kelly and Evans, I would like you to mention in your presentation the following items (you can choose your order and how little you want to say about them)—Intro, Problem formulation, Very short description of the solution process used, Validation, Mesh convergence, Important Results, Conclusions in terms of Design Recommendations (as relevant for your project)
  • Presentations for all groups need to be uploaded to the Box by the midnight previous Sunday.
  • We are starting the class on Monday and Wednesday 5 minutes early so we can do the 5 groups comfortably. So Group 1 starts at 10:05 AM.
  • Group must finish within the 8 minutes so there is time for questions and changing over to the next talk—my apologies for this short time but this is how we have always done it
  • Everyone should be prepared for all aspects of the report as the order of presentation within the group will be randomly assigned.
  • Your seeing various examples is a critical component of the course—attendance is mandatory and no-show in any one of the two days will cause one letter grade reduction in the final grade.
