Lucy Liu
Lucy Liu was born in New York City on December 2nd, 1968. She was born to immigrant parents and went to Stuyvesant High School (a specialized New York high school), then NYU University and later transferred to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor where she majored in Asian Languages and Culture. She did some acting in college as she acted in a commercial and played Alice in a production of Alice in Wonderland at the University of Michigan with the “Basement Arts” student theater group
After graduating college, Lucy Liu began acting with small roles in several TV shows such as L.A. Law, Hercules: The Legendary Journey, and The X-files. She then had a main cast role in Pearl. She made more TV appearances after, even landing a permanent role in Ally McBeal after having such high ratings. After this, she began playing bigger roles in films such as Payback, Play it to the Bone, Shanghai Noon and Charlies Angels.
In 2000, Lucy Liu hosted Saturday Night Live featuring Kanye West. She was the first Asian American to host Saturday Night Live and has been credited by Awkwafina for “Opening the doors.” After this, Lucy Liu starred in many more TV shows and movies. She played Watson on Elementary and was praised for being able to play a role that is usually given to male actors. She has won several awards for her roles such as the Screen Actors Guild award, MTV Movie Award, and the New York Women in Film & Television Muse award.
Other than acting, Lucy Liu is also involved in filmmaking, art, and philanthropy. She directed a movie called Meena which was shown in New York City. Furthermore, she directed episodes of Elementary, an episode of Graceland and Luke Cage. Her art career began when she was 16 years old and she studied drawing, painting and sculpture at the New York Studio School. She has had galleries displaying her work where she has taken some profits and them to UNICEF. Lucy Liu is involved with several philanthropies, UNICEF and Lee National Denim Day. Lucy Liu is a spokeswoman for Lee National Denim Day which raises money for breast cancer. She also is an ambassador for UNICEF and has served in Pakistan and Lesotho.
Lucy Liu is an inspiration in the Asian American community for her ability to gain such success while still being true to her values and supporting Asian American representation.
