We’re hiring: arXiv User Experience Specialist

We are seeking a User Experience Specialist to join our team building arXiv’s next generation (“NG”) system and maintaining the service’s daily operations. The User Experience Specialist will be directly embedded in the software development team, collaborating closely with other developers and reporting to the IT Team Lead. You will have a leading role in defining and championing user-centered design, usability, and accessibility for arXiv NG. With a self-driven, process-oriented approach to design, you will perform analyses on user interfaces and develop workflows, prototypes, mockups, final revisions, and template code for highly complex, rapidly-evolving web applications within the arXiv NG architecture. You will promote and apply current best practices in information architecture, usability, responsive design, accessibility, and relevant supporting technologies.

The User Experience Specialist will meet with diverse stakeholders to gather requirements and develop a scope and timeline for each project. Throughout the lifetime of each project, you will identify and prepare features for all phases of user testing, and facilitate testing and the collection of feedback from the stakeholder groups. You will also actively participate in review processes for relevant parts of the codebase, planning sessions, and retrospectives.

This position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with project team members, subject matter experts, and project managers. The ability to prioritize and manage competing demands, as well as the ability to clearly communicate and negotiate with stakeholders, are essential skills for this position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of relevant experience

  • Deep practical knowledge of web standards, accessibility, and user-centered design processes and methodologies

  • Expert level knowledge of HTML, CSS

  • Deep understanding of grid responsive designs

  • Expert level skills using tools such as Photoshop, Sketch, and/or InVision creating wireframes and prototypes to facilitate and define functional specifications

  • Ability to develop sophisticated templates for web applications in templating languages such as Jinja2 or Twig

  • Ability to modify complex, interdependent web services based on end-user/stakeholder specifications

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Evidence of team-based collaboration experience and a strong orientation

  • Ability to conduct usability testing and identify resulting patterns of user behavior

  • Ability to leverage and integrate off-the-shelf and open source technologies, to identify when and how customized tools and solutions must be developed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using development tools such as JIRA issue tracking, git version control, and foundations or libraries such as Bulma or Bootstrap

  • Experience with designing for optimum accessibility and responsive design

  • Strong visual design skills

  • Familiarity with Python/Flask

  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular.js, or Vue

  • Familiarity with templating and markdown frameworks, such as Jinja2, Sphinx, or similar

  • Understanding of the software development life cycle

  • Experience with web usage analysis tools and assessment practice

This is a three year term, benefits-eligible position, continuation contingent upon additional funding. This position is eligible to work remotely or on-premises. Visa sponsorship is not available with this position.
