arXiv.org Volunteer Moderator Position Description

As moderation across social media sites is making news we thought we would share the current job description for arXiv moderators.

Summary:
The goal of arXiv moderation is to ensure that papers in a particular subject area will be of interest to professional researchers working in that area. Each volunteer moderator scans through all incoming submissions to their category. If the submission looks acceptable the moderator does nothing and submission gets published. Only if there is an issue with a submission does the moderator need to take action. On average 10-15% of arXiv submissions end up needing moderator attention. Only if there is an issue of classification or content with a submission does the moderator need to take action either to change the classification or indicate an issue. The number of submissions per day vary among different subject areas. You can get a sense for the daily submission rate from the mailings for your category. In general the time commitment is a few minutes every day. Volunteer moderators can either browse once a day through our moderation interface or scan through new submissions by email as they come in.
