The Schaghticoke Fair is celebrating its 200th year of being a showcase for the best that Rensselaer County residents and agriculture have to offer. Building after building will be bursting with vegetables, fruits, animals, antiques, baked goods and homemade crafts.
The purpose and content of county fairs has changed over the past 200 years. The main purpose and components of the fair used to be focused on education. Colleges were starting to add agriculture programs, organizations such as 4-H and FFA were getting publicized, and how to effectively grow food based on quality and quantity became a huge inquiry about the agriculture industry.
Today, that educational component still exists, especially with new food discoveries and the constant change of technology. However, exhibition, competition, and entertainment have become a big part of the modern fair experience.
The 3rd oldest Fair in New York State takes great pride in being a Family Fair with hands on participation at its exhibits. Tasting, seeing, hearing and literally feeling agriculture in action is one of the best experiences we can offer.
Check out all the great things that will be happening this year, August 28th – September 2nd!
