***UPDATE: this event has been postponed until spring. please keep an eye on the ag informer for new dates and details.***
Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations, with accidents that can be life threatening or even deadly. Aside from good safety practices, the first line of defense for dealing with farm related accidents is our first responders. In an era where we as a society have become distant from out agricultural roots, first responders may have a limited understanding of farming practices, machinery, or livestock. This lack of understanding can lead to the loss of precious moments while saving a farmer’s life or could even lead to further injuries.
FARMEDIC Training helps to teach first responders how to handle emergencies that are unique to agriculture and rural areas. They will have the opportunity to learn from classroom sessions as well as on-farm, hands-on training. The group will rotate through stations that include grain bin extractions, an overturned tractor, and many other scenarios. This year’s training will be held on October 24-26, 2014 at Kinderhook Creek Farm in Stephentown, NY. Fire departments, ambulance squads, and first responders of all types are encourages to attend.
