In a perfect world, New York would be an exhibition. An architecture student could wander freely without notice, snapping photos in always good lighting and sighing deeply while staring longingly at iconic structure. Alas, this is fantasy… except one weekend, when the city unlocks her doors in a magical event called Open House New York.
OHNY is one of many Archtober events Fall AAP NYC students have the privilege of accessing. This year, students explored high-profile sites, like The Bridge at Cornell Tech and the Recycling Center in Brooklyn, where a giant claw sorts plastic. Meanwhile, the AAP NYC campus opens its own doors to the public.
Hundreds of visitors stopped by the neoclassical Standard Oil Building to admire layers of history laid out by Carrere & Hastings, Shreve, Lamb & Blake, and most recently, Gensler, who led a tour of their 2015 retrofit of the 20th Floor for the Cornell AAP NYC campus. Others came for the spectacular view of the the Statue of Liberty, or to learn more about our program. I spent the day reuniting with friends and alumni, meeting with prospective students, and feeling a deep nostalgia for the past four years.
