Many Hands Make Light(er) Work
…or something like that.
So, given my silence over the past few days, you might infer that there isn’t much going on here at the OWC. In fact, quite the opposite is true.
Migrants of a Different Sort
We (and when I say “we”, I mean everyone in IWS and everyone who is not me in OWC) are neck deep in the process of migrating cornell.edu off of our current servers and onto new machines. On the surface, this sounds like a fairly straight-forward task, but I can assure you that it’s really a herculean effort on everyone’s part. (Even my husband has pitched in by re-wiring our home network so that I can have access to the new environment from the comfort of my couch.)
There is, to the best of my knowledge, no launch date for this just yet–we’re still ironing out issues around both code and access from off-campus locations. In theory, though, this migration should be transparent to all end users. It, like most of our work, is a testament to the unsung heros of IT.
The Beat Goes On
And, lest you think that Carrie and Mark are cooling their heels while the migration work is being done, here’s a brief list of what’s going on elsewhere on cornell.edu:
- Carrie is making updates and edits to the NYC Campus section.
- She is also working on defining what the start of the academic year will look like with regard to the home page. That is…pano-images? News takeovers? Events takeovers?
- She’s ALSO working on a run of new pano images for the Summer and Fall. Subjects that are being considered include the vineyards at Geneva, the Farmer’s Market, Fall Sports, the Equine Research Park, and a really cool shot of Cornell cyclists that would make Lance Armstrong jealous, I’m sure. If you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see in the pano-space, drop me a comment and I’ll pass them along to Carrie.
- Mark and Diane are busy working on the details involved in creating a set of pages about the land grant mission. These will be linked to from the grey nav bar on cornell.edu–which will, of course, require some restructuring of the same. This is set to happen in September.

verry interesting read thanks
What about a site dedicated to the upcoming capital campaign? I understand it is to launch in the fall.
Could you tell me is it an in house server? What are the specs?
If it’s not in-house, where do you rent the server?
Regards,
