Most of us are here – and in this specific field of study – for the fun of it, anecdotal evidence or simply contagious enthusiasm strongly indicating that satisfaction levels are very high with and around vines and wines!
Alas, feeding yourself and/or others generally does require some dinero, plata, pasta, in brief, green paper with old-fashioned looking folks on it.
Wine Business, a monthly magazine with a good internet presence publishes a wine industry salary survey report once a year. They have just made a pre-announcement online with the full report due in their October issue (we have the publication at Cornell). They report that in spite of the current situation, salaries still are increasing at an average of 4.1 percent.
If you are curious to see the full report from last year online, go here. Average salaries for vineyard managers and winemakers had also increased from 2007 to 2008 and were reported to be ~$85,000 and $-95,000, respectively.
