‘Founding Mother’

Acclaimed Cornell historian Mary Beth Norton, the Mary Donlon Alger Professor of American History – and the first woman faculty member in the history department – was the subject of a two-day conference Sept. 28-29 called Liberty’s Daughters and Sons: Celebrating the Legacy of Mary Beth Norton. Arranged by former students and colleagues, the on-campus conference attracted more than 100 scholars, students and others, who presented papers and participated in discussions inspired by Norton’s scholarship on the American Revolution and other subjects. T-shirts at the conference read: “Inspired by our Founding Mother: Mary Beth Norton.”
