Madame ambassador

Makila Z. James ’79 will be sworn in at the State Department July 23 as United States ambassador to Swaziland, Africa’s last absolute monarchy. She majored in Africana studies and history at Cornell.

James joined the Foreign Service in 1988 and has been posted to Jamaica, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and South Sudan. She has also served as international relations officer for Africa at the United Nations Security Council.

Robert L. Harris Jr., professor at the Africana Studies and Research Center and her undergraduate adviser, said James – who holds a master’s degree from the National Defense University and a law degree from Columbia – “was an outstanding student.”
