Hod Lipson and graduate student Michael Schmidt are on Forbes’ list of “The World’s Most Powerful Data Scientists” along with the likes of Google CEO Larry Page and others.
Lipson, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and computing and information science, runs the Cornell Creative Machines Lab and conducts research in everything from robotics to 3D printing.
Forbes cites Lipson and Schmidt for creating an AI program that could distill the laws of motion merely by observing data from the swings of a pendulum.
“In the process, they kicked off the field of robotic science in which AIs try to derive meaning from datasets too large or complex for humans to study,” the Forbes citation reads.
