Refashioning color
The blog Of Another Fashion collects reader-submitted photos of women of color: flappers and bobby soxers, brides and hippies, kimonoed and cocktail dressed. Minh-Ha Pham, assistant professor in the History of Art and Visual Studies and the Asian American Studies Program, curates the site.
“In general, I’m trying to put together a collection of photos and stories that … will illustrate the rich and complex texture of … women of color — who have been both shaped by and shape American fashion in different ways,” Pham told NPR. Pham also runs a research blog on the politics of fashion and beauty called Threadbared.
Of the North Carolina lady en route to church Pham writes, “The date of the photograph may be 1940, but the tilt of that hat is forever.”
