Il divo

David Usher draws on his love of opera to gently awaken the occasional student asleep in his chemistry classes. He sings them Nessun Dorma (“None Shall Sleep”) from Puccini’s Turandot or the berceuse (not unlike a lullaby) from Benjamin Godard’s 1988 opera Jocelyn, which begins, in Usher’s translation, “Oh! wake not yet from out thy dream . . .”

He says he finds that “It is most effective if you actually go over to the sleeping student and sing to them.”
