Racing for a cure

goldberg2For the second consecutive year, Cornell seniors Matt Goldberg and John Lagedrost will run the Chicago Marathon Oct. 10 to raise funds for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a degenerative neuromuscular disorder that affects one out of every 50,000 people, including John’s younger sister, Joanna.

“Joanna is a 17-year-old high school senior whose strength and perseverance inspired us to run the marathon,” said the runners, who founded the FARAmones to raise money to fight FA.

They raised more than $13,000 while completing the 2009 Chicago Marathon and have expanded their team to include five additional members, including Cornell seniors Margaret Hay and Doug Worrall, to make an even greater impact on the search for a cure for FA.
