GEMs
Mechanical engineering graduate student Calvin Phelps and Sara Xayarath Hernandez, director of diversity programs in engineering, received accolades at the 2010 Graduate Education for Minorities (GEM) annual board meeting and mini-conference, Aug. 10-11.
Phelps was presented with the GEM Fellow of the Year Award for his leadership, including his election to 2010-11 national chair of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Hernandez was presented with the GEM University Member Representative of the Year Award for her commitment to and advocacy of current and prospective GEM Fellows.
Also winning GEM Employer Member Representative of the Year Awards were Brookhaven National Lab and Oak Ridge National Lab. Both institutions support current Cornell GEM Fellows.
