“In youth we learn; in age we understand.”

2 weeks in counting til take off…and I still have yet to hear approval of my residence permit. I am a bit of a unique case because I plan on studying abroad for a year. And though many Cornellians have studied abroad for a year, few have through CALS exchange (simply because CALS exchange is a smaller program than CU Abroad) and apparently (to my recent discovery) none have studied for a year at BOKU, the university I will be studying at in Vienna, Austria. This is both scary and thrilling, which I imagine most of the abroad experience will be like.

It is a bit odd to be home in September–I am definitely still in summer mode–but I am usually back at Cornell by mid-August. (I did take a visit up last week to say goodbye to some friends as one last hoorah before I leave for a year and come back as a senior!) All of my close friends from home have gone back to college, and though a few friends are nearby at UConn (I am from a small town in CT) but even my sister, who is a senior in high school this year had to start school yesterday. So the next couple weeks will be spent alone during the day, as both of my parents work during the day. In all honesty though, I need this time for the last minute items on my to-do list (you will learn I am an avid list keeper haha). Such things on this list include: blogging before I leave, finding a suitable carry-on bag, finalize looking at classes…that last one is a bit complicated. I am a Communication major but BOKU is a natural resource university (Boku = Bodenkultur) which makes senses for a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences exchange. But as a Comm major, I prefer more liberal artsy classes over science. So I get the best of both worlds since I will be able to take classes at other universities in the area in addition to BOKU, but which unfortunately means 3x the searching. I am looking at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Business Institute for other classes I may be able to transfer as Comm credit or for my minor in Law and Society. In the end, I have been taking quite a few Arts & Science classes (including German and government) so I have to build up my CALS credits anyways. I am excited to take environmental and nature classes at BOKU. Hopefully I can get into a field study course where we get to explore outside; I better be careful though because I am quite clumsy =P (one of the top worries for my family for me). So off to search for classes I go…

Oh and in case you didn’t catch my name, I’m Sabina :)
