Captive Propagation

The Cornell Raptor is equipped to breed and release select raptorial species. Our roots in the Peregrine Fund have encouraged the continued propagation of select species due to conservation and population statuses. In the past we have focused on accipiter species such as Coopers’ Hawks (accipiter cooperii), Sharp Shinned Hawks (accipiter striatus), and Northern Goshawks (accipiter gentilis).

The Cornell Raptor Program does not house any current breeding pairs and is not actively seeking to obtain animals for propagation at this time. However, we would consider breeding in the future if we were to acquire a non-releasable pair from a threatened or declining species, such as the American Kestrel.

These four red-shouldered hawk chicks were raised in spring 2017 and successfully released into the wild!
