Where can I find consultants for my computer science class?

December 2008

(Special thanks this month to Annemarie Morse of ACCEL)

Q: My professor said I can get my test re-graded at the “consulting desk” at the Engineering Library, Reading Room, but I don’t see any desk like that here. I asked upstairs at ACCEL but no one there quite knew what they were talking about.

A: Certain CS courses used to have office hours in the computer lab in the basement of Carpenter Hall.  Then the area was renovated and the lab removed.  For awhile they were holding office hours in the Reading Room of the Engineering Library, but that became distracting to the patrons around them.  We have agreed that they can use a part of the Green Room in ACCEL and they have it scheduled most afternoons.  They are called CS 100 (or whatever course) consultants which confuses everyone because ACCEL also calls our employees “consultants”. However, ACCEL cannot help them with their homework, do test pickups or regrades.  We tell the patron that the office hours for these consultants are posted outside the green room, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to help.  I have passed this on to the professors asking them to clarify this issue to their students.  It seems to arise as a problem every year.
