Summer Scholar 2019: Christopher Rivera Torres (Chris Rivera)
Chris has joined the EVADE team as an undergraduate summer scholar for 2019. Native from the island of Puerto Rico. He is currently a senior student in the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez Campus and studies in the Crop Protection program in the Agro-Environmental Sciences Department. Chris is working with Dr. Sandeep Sharma in performing a forward genetic screen to develop a population of random insertional mutants using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation (AMT) in Cercospora beticola and screen the mutant’s ability to cause disease on table beets and produce cercosporin. In the long term, selected mutants will be combined and sequenced to identify the genomic regions associated with the phenotype. Chris’s interests in research are focused on plant pathology, mycology, epidemiology, molecular plant pathology, outreach and more.

- Summer Internship at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) USDA-ARS. Mycology and Nematology Genetic Diversity and Biology Laboratory leaded by Dr. Lisa Castlebury.
- Research on “Susceptibility of Plant Pathogenic Fungi to Antimicrobial Peptides and Combinatorial Treatments. ” Sponsored by ECaFSS and UPRM.
- Summer Internship doing fieldwork with the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) in the field office of Gettysburg, Adam’s County, PA.
