Nugen Ph.D. Student Michelle Duong Honorable Mention in CU Graduate School 3 Minute Thesis Competition

Michelle Duong (fourth from right), made it to the final round of the 5th annual Cornell University Graduate School 3M 3 Minute Thesis Competition  with her presentation “Franken-Phage to Save the Day”.  Students were challenged with the task of presenting their thesis (potentially up to 80,000 words!) in just 3 minutes.  Each presenter was judged on their ability to explain their research also to a non-technical audience. Be sure to see Michelle’s presentation in this You-Tube video.

Michelle Duong at the 2018 SQF International Conference

Michelle attended the  2018 Safe Food Quality International Conference in Atlanta from October 22-25, 2018 as a scholarship recipient through the SQFI and the Food Marketing Institute.  The SQF International Conference is a creative and interactive educational and networking event that seeks to help food safety and other food industry and regulatory professionals with developing and implementing effective QA and food safety programs.  The SQF Conference uses non-traditional, non-academic methods such as art and theatre to actively engage participants in food safety education and personal professional development.  Learn more about SQFI here.

Water Safety Goes Viral: These Little Viruses Can Detect Contamination“, by Fiona MacMillan

Read how the Nugen group phage research has led to the design of innovative, low-cost indicators of water quality, useful tools for low-resource regions around the globe.  The group recently published in the Royal Chemist Society a scientific report detailing this work: Reporter bacteriophage T7NLC utilizes a novel NanoLuc::CBM fusion for the ultrasensitive detection of Escherichia coli in water”.

Fall 2018 Food Science Seminar Series Speaker Elizabeth Kutter, PhD

Elizabeth Kutter, Professor Emeritus from Evergreen State College met with the Nugen group for good food and equally good discussion after her presentation for the Fall 2018 Food Science Seminar Series.  Follow your dreams and do not question your goals, ambitions, and abilities was a big take-away message from this inspirational speaker.
