I’m no Scrooge, I swear!0

“Until one feels the spirit of Christmas, there is no Christmas. All else is outward display – so much tinsel and decorations. For it isn’t the holly, it isn’t the snow. It isn’t the tree not the firelight’s glow. It’s the warmth that comes to the hearts of men when the Christmas spirit returns again.” -Anonymous

Now that I’ve been home for almost a week, I’ve had some time to relax and get at least nine hours of sleep a night. It has been nice to catch up on trashy reality TV and to get into the spirit of the season, neither of which I had the chance to do a week ago while buried in the library. The grades are in and it seems the hard work paid off this year, thankfully.

With some friends, family, daily yoga, shopping and homemade cooking, I’m getting into the holiday groove. Especially after the huge snowfall last week, everyone is counting on a white Christmas. The snow proved for some interesting adventures, particularly for my dog, Griffey.

Griffey was also excited to received the Tickle Me Elmo of pet holiday gifts this year, the “Desperate House Dog.”

So the holiday festivities are all up and running in my little Midwestern corner of the world (below, the clock tower all lit up on the green in my hometown). I’ve had the chance to go into downtown Cleveland to enjoy dinner, a special exhibition at the art museum and a great holiday concert by the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall.

There really is nowhere like home for the holidays, and I hope you all enjoy the spirit of the season!

Study & Exam Weeks, in Summation0

“I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” -Abraham Lincoln

Here at Cornell, we have a few days of a study period and then about a week and a half of exams. This is what I’ve been up to, and why I haven’t been around so much.

51 – At least the number of hours spent in the library. Many, many, many more were spent studying in other places.

26 – Double spaced, 12 point font pages composed.

9 – AM, the earliest time I arrived at the library (pretty impressive for a college student, if I don’t say so myself).

8 – The number of different libraries I stepped foot in so I could study.

5 – Holiday events I attended, to enjoy friends, free food and fun. Oh, and to make sure I didn’t go insane after an eleven hour day (no joke) in the library.

3 – Exams taken.

2 – AM, the latest time I left the library.

1 – More semester left at Cornell – yikes!

0 – The number of times I did laundry during the two weeks. I’ve deduced this is why the pile of clothes (clean, finally) in my room to fold looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Thank goodness that is (almost) over.0

“Make thy books thy companions. Let thy cases and shelves be thy pleasure grounds and gardens.” -Judah ibn-Tibbon

I’ve been totally exhausted by our two weeks of exam this semester. I was in the libe the first day, and I got kicked out this evening on the last day (not the first time it happened in the past few days either). No matter how much you try to plan ahead, when you have several major assignments due every 24 hours, things can get a bit tough. I have one more assignment to send in, and then I will be done! And back to Ohio tomorrow, hopefully before Ithaca gets pounded by snow . . . winter break here I come!

The Festival of Lights0

“You don’t need Deck the Halls or Jingle Bell Rock / ‘Cause you can spin the dreidel with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock–both Jewish!” -Adam Sandler

Whether Hanukkah is or isn’t your holiday of choice this time of year, the fact that Ho Plaza is currently home to an ice menorah should amaze everyone. It is fully functional and stands taller than me (5′8″). And from what I can tell, this baby is planning to last the entirety of eight nights. Since it currently feels like 2 degrees outside, I don’t see it having much of a problem.
