Google announces Buzz

Posted by: | February 10, 2010 | 2 Comments |

Since we’re talking about Google tomorrow, it is particularly timely that they would roll out a new service today. Buzz. It may be their answer to Twitter, or an attempt to turn GMail into Facebook, or a way to lure GMail users to Google Wave. You decide.

I see this as a direct attack on Facebook. Many of the features that were highlighted are currently available on Facebook. Some comments even seemed subtly directed right at Facebook (ie: “going beyond status messages” or seeing photos “big and fast”)
Google failed to take over Facebook this summer and it is no secret that they would love to gain all of that highly personal advertising information about us. Great article about Google’s attempt at Facebook, and Facebook itself can be found at Wired: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/17-07/ff_facebookwall

    Two things:
    1. What if I want to keep my “buzz” separate from my email? I don’t want my already overflowing inbox bombarded with buzz. Here’s a link to fix this already.

    2. Google got it wrong (at least for me) when it said “When you’re out in the real world, you usually want to say something about where you are.” Maybe I just don’t understand society- but I really have no desire to say something about where I am/ what I’m feeling/ what I’m eating etc.
