Campaign Description:In the Manhattan office we will be working with Environment NY on their campaign to ban Marcellus Shale gas drilling. Horizontal high-volume hydraulic fracturing in the Marcellus Shale, called “fracking” for short, is the leading environmental issue in our state.  The grassroots efforts of Environment New York and other environmental organizations has kept drilling out of our state so far, but the oil and gas industry have been relentless in pressuring the State to allow drilling.

We don’t have to look farther than our next-door neighbors in Pennsylvania to see the risks inherent in Marcellus Shale gas drilling.  Since 2004, the gas industry has drilled more than 3,000 fracking wells in Pennsylvania and has left a trail of environmental pollution and public health problems in its wake.  It has contaminated drinking water with toxic chemicals such as benzene, toluene and formaldehyde, and dumped under-treated drilling waste in rivers and streams.  Health experts are finding huge risks from air pollution near drilling sites, and residents living near gas operations have consistently experienced dizziness and nosebleeds.

Gov. Cuomo is moving closer to allowing Fracking here in New York and we know that is a result of the influence of huge corporations like Halliburton and ExxonMobil.  Currently the governor is proposing opening up 5 rural New York counties along the Pennsylvania border to gas drilling.  The plan is to start with 5 counties, but we’ve seen in other states that once the drillers get their boots in the door, they will push and push to get into the rest of the state, from the Finger Lakes to the Catskills.  If we’re going to defend New York’s health and environment from Marcellus Shale drilling, we need to make sure the Governor and our legislators in Albany hear the voice of the public over the voice of the gas industry.

Job Activities/Scope: We sign up members and fundraise for Environment New York through street canvassing. We get out into public places and talk with as many people as possible about the work of Environment New York. We identify people who support the issue and get them involved. Canvassers will receive rigorous training on the skill of canvassing, and will have the opportunity to receive optional, additional trainings campaign skills such as generating local media coverage, petitioning, and campaign strategy.

Knowledge and Skills: There are no requirements for prior knowledge or skills. Broadly, we are looking for candidates who work hard, communicate well, and are interested in working toward positive social change.

Compensation/Pay: The average pay is $11-$16 per hour.

Eko Tracks offers study abroad programs in veterinary science and wildlife conservation, internships in wildlife conservation and park management, a volunteer opportunity in wildlife rehabilitation, a field expedition and eco tours in southern Africa. These are specifically designed for students, nature and outdoor lovers, adventurers and other interest groups.

The veterinary study abroad program in South Africa is designed for students in veterinary science, vet tech or pre-vet with a focus on wildlife veterinary science, wildlife diseases and medicine, participation in capture and care of wild animals, breeding of rare species, wildlife rehabilitation, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation. The adventure-filled wildlife conservation study abroad program in South Africa focuses on field techniques, sustainable resource utilization, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, game reserve and resort management, and game capture operations. The above programs are offered through lectures, field work and interactions with field vets, biologists and conservationists. These programs are endorsed by the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation.

We offer two internships in wildlife conservation. One program is operated on a large biosphere reserve in South Africa where you will acquire knowledge in vegetation monitoring, wildlife population surveys including lions, rhinos and elephants, habitat management, biodiversity and park management. The other program, carnivore conservation is in Namibia where you radio track released predators, set camera traps, collect field data and practice animal care.

The volunteer program in Namibia is at a wildlife sanctuary where volunteers work with African wildlife including cheetahs, wild dogs, lions, baboons etc.. A unique field expedition, led by a wildlife ecologist explores the landscapes, ecosystems, diversity of wildlife, conservation challenges and parks of Namibia. You will experience behind the scenes activities and discover considerably more than on a typical African safari.

MFK AGRICULTURE PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Meds & Food for Kids (MFK) is a not-for-profit manufacturer of nutritious foods used for the treatement of malnutrition in Haiti.  Currently, the primary products are peanut-based Ready-to-Use Therapeautic (RUTF) and Supplementary (RUSF) foods used by UNICEF, the World Food Progamme and other institutional care providers.  MFK is partnered with the world’s leading producer of these products, Nutriset, and in 2012 has completed the construction of a 20,000 sqft facility in Cap Haitian, Haiti’s second largest city.  MFK aims to combate malnutrition while creating economic development opportunities by employing local people and procuring locally sourced materials when possible, including processing local peanuts.

MFK’s agricultural goal is to develop the peanut farming industry in order to be able to purchase more low aflatoxin peanuts for use in our nutritional therapy products. MFK’s facilty includes a ½ MT/hr peanut processing line and has worked with over 1000 farmers and farmer cooperatives to improve peanut production in the region.

The Opportunity

MFK offers the opportunity to share your skills and gain first-hand experience working in international development for an exciting young social enterprise. This position must be Haiti based.  We request a 12-24 month commitment working with majority Haitian staff and several North American and European volunteer staff.

While the Cap-Haitien area is relatively quiet and peaceful, it is still underdeveloped. This experience is not for the faint of heart. It will challenge the Agriculture Program Coordinator in all regards: emotionally, socially, professionally, and more. This job is challenging, but it is also rewarding. You will be a vital, indispensable member of the MFK team in its quest to make life-saving RUTF available to all those who need it.  The Coordinator will also live with other permanent and temporary MFK staff in an apartment, and be expected to contribute to communal chores and activities (marketing, cooking, cleaning, trips to the beach, etc.).

Agricultural Program Coordinator Job Description

The Agriculture Program Coordinator (APC) is responsible for developing and implementing programs that will improve farmer livelihoods, ensure a supply of high quality peanuts to MFK’s processing facility, and improve MFK’s ability to process raw peanuts into high quality roasted peanuts at an optimal efficiency.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

·        Develop and implement programs aimed to improve the quantity and quality of peanuts in MFK’s supply chain, while improving farmer livelihoods. This includes:

·          Working closely with faculty and students through the USAID’s Peanut Collaborative Research Support Program to develop and implement relevant research projects (e.g experimental plots, experimental uses for peanut waste, etc.)

·          Collaborating with NGO’s, agribusinesses, and entities involved in agricultural development initiatives in northern and northeastern Haiti

·          Work with farmers individually or through trainings to introduce improved production methods (e.g. fungicides, small tractors, irrigation, etc.)

·          Ensure that improved seed from “International Crop Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics”  is multiplied and distributed to farmers

·        Work with MFK’s quality department to ensure that peanut processing meets all international safety standards

·        Monitor and improve the efficiency of peanut processing division

·        Develop funding proposals to assure continued financial sustainability of agricultural projects

·        Direct and supervise MFK’s agronomist, agricultural technician, agricultural development fellow, peanut processing officer, and peanut processing team in completing program tasks

·        Other tasks and duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Deputy Director

Requirements:

·        B.S. degree required, M.S. preferred, in an agricultural science (e.g. Crop and Soil Science, Plant Science, etc.), agricultural or development economics, or related field

·        1 year practical farming experience, experience with farm machinery

·        3-5 years of related work experience in agricultural development in a developing country, experience with peanuts a plus

·        A minimum of 3 years in a supervisory capacity

·        Knowledge of and experience working with international NGOs and foreign governments preferred

·        Proficiency in English (spoken and written) required, proficiency in Creole and/or French (spoken and written)  preferred

·        Experience in grant writing and in winning project proposals with emphasis on agricultural development preferred

·        Excellent leadership qualities and communication skills

Ability to communicate with others in order to provide information, advice, and guidance to technical and program officials and provide/obtain information from agency employees, state and local planning commissions, and other organizations on a variety of controversial or complex issues. Good written and oral skills are required. Knowledge of the Clean Water Act, Texas Total Maximum Daily Load Program, quality assurance procedures, and the NRCS Field Office Technical Guide is preferred.

Company Background
We are a full service Agronomy and Agricultural Environmental Consulting Organization in Northern New York State.  We have been in business since 2001 conducting business with larger farms which are regulated by the DEC for manure management and farmstead runoff.  We have provided plans and recommendations that help the farm meet compliance with CAFO regulation, storm water permitting, mining permits, and other regulations as they pertain to agriculture.  For many of the farms we work with, we also provide agronomy services, to include, field scouting to determine pest thresholds along with recommendations to improve economic viability.  Fertilizer recommendations are based on manure inputs and crop yield expectations, pesticides are used on an as need basis to reduce pests below thresholds of economic loss.  ArcGIS is used extensively to help manage and organize the farm projects and to help develop plans that are compliant with the regulations.  Survey equipment and CAD has also been utilized to varying degrees for assisting Best Management Practice feasibility.
The goal of the organization is to be the industry leader in providing farm managers recommendations and services that will meet their agronomic and environmental concerns.  In some cases environmental regulations may not be in the best interest of what is agronomically correct.  It is our duty to find a way to make the two come together to keep the customer compliant while also achieving farm profitability.
The applicant must be able to see the big picture, must be highly motivated, solution oriented and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.  Written and oral communication skills are necessary to developing long term value added relationships with the client.  In many cases you will need to be able to communicate with regulators and other professionals in the industry to develop the best solution for the farm.   Collaboration with other professionals will help strengthen your credibility as a planner and consultant.
The successful applicant will need to have a BS degree in Environmental or Agricultural Science with course work in Chemistry, Botany, Entomology, and/or Soils.  Two years of experience is preferred but not required if applicant is teachable and willing to learn.  Individuals without specified degree but with 5 or more years of experience in the agricultural sector conducting agronomy services may apply.  The individual must be willing to work with crop production farms without cows and crop producing dairy farms that manage over 3500 cows.   Applicant must be willing to acquire Certified Crop Advisor status within 2 years of successful hire. Applicant must be willing to develop skills to acquire certification as an Agricultural Environmental Planner within 5 years of successful hire.

Applicant will need to be able to:
•    Have a valid driver’s license
•    Operate 4 wheelers and other light equipment
•    Walk corn, soybean, wheat, forage fields, and farmstead areas
•    Know how to read maps
•    Lift up to 100 lbs.

 Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area

Site Coordinator

Contract up to 12 months (renewable)

Purpose:  The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has an MoU with the Government of Lao PDR to provide technical assistance to the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area (NEPL NPA) in northern Laos.  The Site Coordinator will be the WCS on-site liaison between WCS, the NEPL NPA and other government organizations, and will build capacity of government and non-government staff working in the NPA Management Unit office to effectively administer daily protected area operations, information systems and logistics in the NEPL NPA.

Duties:

Work with and provide training for a dynamic team of government and non-government staff to coordinate the management of on-site operations of the NEPL NPA that includes:

• Regular planning, implementing and reporting on protected area activities that encompasses forest protection, conservation education, land use planning, ecotourism, research and monitoring;
• Coordination with village, district and provincial government organizations to facilitate protected area activities;
• Design and maintenance of information management systems for recording, tracking and reporting on protected area activities conducted in several districts and villages around the NPA;
• Design and maintenance of systems to manage and track use and repair of NPA vehicles and equipment by field teams across several districts;
• Management and maintenance of computers, software, internet and IT system at the NPA office;
• Implementation of documented procedures and processes for managing and reporting on all expenses charged against donor funding for the NPA;
• Contribute to the prparation of funding proposals for future activities of the NPA.

Qualifications:

• Extensive work experience in project management, with an understanding of protected area management and operations;
• Preferred candidate will have experience in protected area management with some experience in managing a forest protection system.
• Experienced in informal education of adults, including training, capacity-building and team building techniques;
• experience working with a diverse multi-cultural team;
• Cooperative attitude, reliable, well-organized and honest;
• Ability to work effectively and achieve objectives at a remote location with limited supervision;
• Ability to live in rural and relatively remote conditions, with good health and fitness;
• Applied practical and creative skills in problem solving;

Ideally the position is based in Viengthong District, Houaphan Province with frequent travel to Vientaine.  Both national and international candidates are encouraged to apply.  Virginia Cooperative Extension seeks an accomplished visionary leader of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Extension programs with the ability to engage faculty and stakeholders in pursuit of excellence. This position reports to the Director of Extension and is responsible for leading the ANR Extension education program supported by agents and specialists in three Virginia Tech colleges, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), College of Natural Resources and Environment (CNRE), and College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and in cooperation with Virginia State University. HB LTER Information Manager Job Announcement

The Hubbard Brook Long-Term Ecological Research program (HBR-LTER) seeks an Information Manager (IM)
to oversee the development and structure of the HBR-LTER information management system and to provide
expertise and support for scientists conducting HBR-LTER research projects and data syntheses.

The HBR-LTER is committed to making data and information publically available, which is accomplished primarily through the HBR-LTER website (www.hubbardbrook.org). The IM will further develop and update the website and will maintain, improve and create programs and scripts designed to query data and populate the website. The IM will improve access to GIS and remote sensing data on the website, make new spatial data available, and facilitate use of the data. The IM will assist HBR-LTER scientists with spatial data needs and will fulfill requests for creating maps and conducting spatial analyses. The IM will also track the location of research projects conducted at the HBR-LTER and will record information in a spatial database management system. In addition to HBR-LTER site specific activities, the IM will contribute to LTER network-wide information management activities and is expected to participate in meetings, ad-hoc working groups, and network-level committees. The position will require occasional travel including, but not limited to, national LTER Information Management meetings.
