Key people to know and how they relate to the Sibley School PhD student community:

Associate Director for Graduate Affairs, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering:

  • Christopher Hernandez (who is also ME DGS, but these titles need not be held by same person)
  • role:  runs this blog.  faculty in charge of affairs of PhD students associated with Sibley School.  Includes students in ME, AE, and TAM fields, and students in other fields that are supervised by Sibley School faculty.  Controls resources related to students and, by courtesy from DGSs of ME, AE, TAM, controls admission to these three fields.  Does not, by title, control academic aspects of the student experience (that is controlled by the field DGS’s).

  • Dr. Marcia Sawyer
  • role:  staff in charge of affairs of PhD students associated with Sibley School.  Includes students in ME, AE, and TAM fields, and students in other fields that are supervised by Sibley School faculty

 

Director of Graduate Studies for Mechanical Engineering

  • Mason Peck
  • role:  controls academic aspects of AE student progress toward degree. Signature required for basically every step of the process–committee, Q exam, A exam, B exam.  Defers Q exams to DGS of ME  by courtesy.

 

Director of Graduate Studies for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics

  • Herbert Hui
  • role:  controls academic aspects of TAM student progress toward degree. Signature required for basically every step of the process–committee, Q exam, A exam, B exam.

 

Director, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering:

  • Mark Campbell
  • role:  in charge of everything.  appoints Associate Director for Graduate Affairs.  Less likely to be a direct contact for students (which is why listed down here on the list).  Certainly the person to go to if you have concerns about the Associate Director.

 

Associate Director for Undergraduate Affairs, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering:

  • Betta Fisher
  • role:  runs the undergraduate program.  Works with Assoc Dir Grad Affairs and DGS’s regarding teaching assistantships–ADGA decides which TAs will be given to fields, DGS’s decide TA requirements for fields, ADUA decides which student will TA which class.
