22 Aug ME/AE joint Field Meeting highlights

Excerpts from 22 Aug joint AE/ME Graduate Field meeting that are (a) suitable for public disclosure and (b) perhaps of interest to the broad student community follow.  Unlike meeting minutes, which are official and approved by faculty vote, this summary is mine alone and has not been vetted or approved by the faculty.

ME and AE are distinct fields but they do share a Q exam process and so this meeting, which was mostly focused on the Q exam, was jointly called by me (ME DGS) and by Prof. Garcia (AE DGS).

Two motions were passed, one each for ME and AE, to require that students matriculating Fall 2013 or later pass MAE7999 two times.

The written Q exam guidelines have been changed for ME and AE.  Mostly these changes are to bring the written rules up to date to match current practice.  These rules were passed separately for AE and for ME.  One key change that students will note is that there are now 5 Q exams:

  • solid mechanics
  • fluid mechanics
  • thermal sciences
  • biomedical mechanics
  • dynamics, systems, and control

The two exams listed that have not been given recently (thermal sciences and biomedical mechanics) were actually on the books but we had stopped implementing them in practice.  We will implement them going forward.
