Ozone injury on beans

Leaves shown below have severe injury from exposure to ambient (naturally occurring) ozone.  This snap bean line is very susceptible.  It was selected for a research project at LIHREC to quantify the potential impact of ozone on plant productivity, which was found to be quite substantial.  Weight of beans harvested immature for fresh market was reduced as much as 62%.

Less severe injury has been observed on pole beans.

Injury has not been observed on commercial snap bean varieties in commercial fields or gardens.
