We may be ranked #14 in the world behind our more well-known ivy counterparts, but we often make the top of lists compiled to show the most stressful colleges and universities. It is a very stressful environment, but very rewarding. The past 2 weeks have been my most stressful weeks and now that I’m coming out of it I’m emerging more as a drowned cat than a beautiful butterfly. I definitely am taking this weekend to recuperate because being so stressed is starting to make me feel ill. I can NOT afford to be sick right now. When you find yourself feeling this way, which may be kind of often, it is important to remember the importance of your health and get yourself together. Everyone is different, but I wanted to share my top 10 favorite ways of de-stressing:
#1: Listen to Music- typically an upbeat pop song or an intense “I hate the world” song always seems to make me feel better.
#2: Read a Book that is not for School- I am currently challenging myself to complete the Books You Need to Read in Your 20s list.
#3: Watch Something New on Netflix- ALWAYS looking for new shows to watch on Netflix. For some reason I like watching shows after they are cancelled or after they are popular. No idea why, but it works for me!
#4: Do a HIIT Video on YouTube- HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. There is nothing like your insides clenching and gasping for breath to make you forget your stress. Also, exercise has been proven to reduce stress.
#5: Meditate- This is new to me but it has been helpful in all aspects of my life. It takes practice, but it’s amazing.
#6: Dessert Time!!- My favorite meal is dessert, but I try not to have too many sweets. If I’m stressed out I sometimes allow myself to get a little crazy with the dessert tray. Everything in moderation??? Not when I’m stressed! But warning: Don’t go overboard.
#7: Write it Out- Writing, whether it is blogging, writing in a journal, or whatever, always makes me feel a little less stressed. It feels like the burden is being lifted and put onto someone else, even though there’s no actual person.
#8: Treat Myself to Online Shopping- I recently had Christmas in October because I was stressed and ordered some goodies for myself. In my defense I did need winter clothes, and I am so glad I ordered them when I did because it is already so cold outside now!
#9: Phone a Friend- Have a best friend? Well this is exactly what they’re for! I like talking to my best friends because they take my mind off of whatever is stressing me out. Instead of talking about it I get to be silly and talk about random things that won’t ever be relevant to real life.
#10: Breathe in Some Fresh Air- Sometimes de-stressing can be simple. Sometimes all it takes is a nice walk outside or a deep breath in and out. Just taking a moment of silence, quieting your mind, and calming yourself works like magic!
I hope you have developed methods that help you manage your stress. Try some of mine and share some of yours with me!
