“Beyond the Taj” photos, here at Cornell and via ArtStor.org

Bonnie MacDougall (2006 Faculty Innovation in Teaching awardee) and her late husband, Robert MacDonald, traveled, researched, photographed, and collected materials from South Asia over many years. 7000 of their images are available online through Cornell University Library (http://beyondthetaj.library.cornell.edu/index.php) and soon as part of the ARTstor digital library (http://www.artstor.org/).

This week’s Cornell Chronicle has a short article about the project (http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Feb09/tajCollection.html).

MacDougall also completed a book as part of her Faculty Innovation in Teaching award. “Text into Form: Dwelling, Cosmos and Design Theory in Traditional South Asia” includes translations of 3 South Asian texts related to her work. These are available through the CUL eCommons (http://ecommons.library.cornell.edu/handle/1813/1460/browse-title).

GIS Tools are Putting Watershed Education on the Map

The “Putting Watershed Education on the Map” FIT project (2008 cycle, awarded by FABIT) had as one of its goals the development of a social mapping tool to help students and the community gather information about issues related to the Cayuga Lake Watershed. The tool’s intention is to provide a place for students in both the sciences and social scientists to share geo-located information, to encourage them to collaborate directly with the public, and to use mapping as a way of understanding the complexities of water management.

The first iteration of this mapping tool will be presented at GIS day, on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008, at Mann Library, from 1:30-2:30. http://www.mannlib.cornell.edu/services/reference/GIS/gisday2008.cfm

I invite you to come and try the mapping tool and meet the project team, Todd Walter (Biological and Environmental Engineering), Rich Stedman (Natural Resources), and me, Noni Korf Vidal, (CIT). The mapping tool will be used in Spring 2009, BEE 4730: Watershed Engineering, and then again in Fall 2009, NATRES 4320: Human Dimensions of Natural Resources.

If you can’t make it to the presentation but are interested in the outcomes of this project, please send me a note, or watch this blog for updates.

About the FIT Blog

Welcome to the blog for the Faculty Innovation in Teaching (FIT) program to stay informed about activities, project news & updates, special events and the FIT speaker series.

It is a goal of the Faculty Innovation in Teaching program to support the cycle of innovation beyond implementation of individual projects. Faculty will be encouraged to participate in program activities that promote scholarly discussion of the relationship between pedagogy and technology, and to share information with the larger Cornell teaching community. This blog is designed to facilitate the FIT program Community of Practice.
