Matching Market Saves Lives!
The shortage of organ donors is a well-known, urgent health crisis. More than 114,000 people in the United States are currently on a national waiting list enduring a long, painful, and stressful wait for an organ, and, unfortunately, the sad reality is that many will die before receiving one. Roth addresses this challenge by creating a better algorithm for the kidney organ exchange program where patients with incompatible donors match with compatible donors and their incompatible donors match with compatible patients for a better match, and, therefore, starting a chain of kidney transplants.
In some places, waiting time for a kidney, the organ most in demand, can stretch for years, with prospective recipients continuing to suffer through debilitating dialysis treatments. With this new system, more patients are being matched with donors, more kidney transplants are being performed, and millions of dollars spent on dialysis are being saved. Most importantly, many more lives are being saved.
