Facebook recently launched new app Facebook Dating. People often complain about the current dating apps because they get matched with users that they know nothing about. However, this new app of Facebook matches people from same geography and same shared interest, group, and events. And, this app also has an option for the users to get matched to their Facebook friend’s friends. The app does not allow the user to get matched to their own Facebook friend, but he/she can add his/her friends as “Secret Crush” (upto nine friends). For instance, if a girl added her friend to “Secret Crush” list, that person will also get notified that someone added him as “Secret Crush”; however, he will not know who added him. If he also adds the girl as “Secret Crush,” the name will be revealed and they will be matched. This new app is also notable because it is the first time that Facebook and Instagram did collaboration. Through this dating app, users can combine their pictures and informations from both apps to create their profile and find people. This dating app will be an app within Facebook app, but users can link their Instagram pictures and stories to create their dating profile.
This new feature of Facebook is related to our class because it is related to networks. Unlike other popular dating apps such as Tinder where the user gets matched to a random user that he/she knows nothing about, Facebook dating app connects people that you have some networks with. If we are talking about this in the graph sense, while Tinder matches people from two components, Facebook dating app have the ability to connect two people that have some kind of connection, whether through their interest group, events, and even their own friends through the feature of “secret crush.” As an app with around 3 billion users, Facebook is using its power as a popular social network app to not only connecting people but also it is helping their users find their love.
