Google vs Bing: How to Get a Higher PageRank
Different search engines actually determine their website ranking values differently enough that if you’re investing in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your website, you need to consider the differences. In the global market, Google holds 80% of the market share and Bing + Yahoo (Yahoo is powered by Bing) holds 12%, so just optimizing for Google is fine there. However, in the US, Google has 60% and Bing has 33%. That’s a huge chunk of the market that goes toward’s Bing’s search results.
In terms of PageRank, both Google and Bing value pages with the high values, as we learned in class about authority values being determined by hub scores. In other words, Google and Bing like pages that have credible backlinks. However, Bing actually values quantity over quality in terms of hub pages. Most likely, Google places multipliers on its scoring algorithm for hub scores such that the most credible backlinks will be emphasized to determine the authority score. Bing, however, will weight its sites more equally and your best bet at scoring a good PageRank is building up a much higher quantity of decently credible backlinks.
In addition, Google’s Penguin algorithm is fundamentally different from Bing’s search algorithm when ranking anchor text. For Google’s Penguin, sites with too many exact-text anchors will actually get penalized, while Bing encourages this. Bing looks for optimized anchor text! However, this can lead to spammy anchor texts and links, which is why Google tends to avoid it.
Finally, Bing’s algorithm actually looks at social media. It creates hubs out of social media references and inherently will end up ranking websites more widespread on social media higher anyways.
Overall, different search engines differ in what they optimize for, and it is important to consider the different methods of scoring when determining your SEO.
