Guiding users to find quality information through Trust Flow

We learned about the concept of PageRank in this class. PageRank measures how influential each website is by analyzing the links between other websites and ranks each website to help users to find relevant information quickly In the past, PageRank algorithm was successful because there were enough size of information on the web for people to find; however, this is no longer the case. So much information is flowing into our web everyday that it is getting difficult for people to find trust worthy information. The fake news is spreading and confusing users. Before too many people have a conception that most information in the web is fake, we need a different approach.

This article talks about Trust Flow, a new concept being implemented in our search engines. This new algorithm basically measures how trustworthy each website is by analyzing the quality of expert contents. In order to receive high Trust Flow score, websites need to “create fresh, highly informative content and naturally acquiring authoritative backlinks” according to the article. I think this approach is very efficient because it sorts information based on trustworthy contents and guides users to find quality information quickly.

With more fake information disrupting our life, this algorithm needs to be applied in our social media. Facebook sorts our news feed differently because there are connections between users to worry about; however, I feel that there needs to be a some form of score system to identify whom to trust. Facebook needs to physically show scores to the users so that users can distinguish what the quality information is because there will not be enough cues for users to make judgements.
