Cyber Monday and Viruses

Cyber Monday is a great time for cyber-attackers! During the holiday season, this works best because people are looking for best deals on items.  During this time, attackers send out spam emails that prompt people to click on a link that carries a virus! According to the article, many times attackers either will send thousands of emails or get one person on social media and get all of their friends infected as well. On social media, people if someone shares on your wall, or tweets something, you have a tendency to open the links. However, if the link carries a virus, you will most likely get infected and then on your own social media account, that spammed link will also be posted and it’ll make your friends click on it too.

This is similar to what we learned in class because this is how information cascades work. What we learned in class was that “an information cascade has the potential to occur when people make decisions sequentially, with later people watching the actions of earlier people, and from these actions inferring something about what the earlier people know.” This is true because if you see a lot of your friends sharing this “link” on social media, you will want to click on it and then there will be a cascade of people clicking on the link and getting viruses. Therefore lesson is do not get tricked by cyber-attackers this holiday season!
