FAMA helps companies perform background checks

The article I chose showcases a new program called FAMA. FAMA stands for FAMA is a new company that searches through social media content for things that might make employers hesitate to hire a potential employee. The program looks for “social media red flags” which would include things such as “drug use, sexual content, bigotry or profanity, among other things”.

These lead to new legal problems – how much is FAMA allowed to access? The information that users may mark as ‘private’ might not be fully private. This relates to class material because social media and the people we connect with truly reflects who we are – and who we interact with. This information can be a very accurate and useful indication of what kind of employee we would be. So as employers, FAMA would be very important in identifying future employees with high potential. FAMA has also announced collaborations with other companies to make for stronger background checks.
