Hidden danger of crime behinds social media

In class we covered the topic of social network. While many social media websites such as facebook and twitter have achieved great social and economical impacts, it also provided a new method of crime. Many enjoy the networks of college friends, work friends and family formed on these social sites, however, when these information become too public and too easy to search, it also provided a gateway for crime.
It takes little effort to hike one’s facebook or whatsapp, after that, the hiker would gain a whole knowledge scope of the person’s personal circle and even their contact information (especially so with the newly synched iphone contacts with fb friends). Then it becomes very easy to send a false alarming note to all your close friends, asking for emergency money or etc. Many will fall for it.
Some other social media allows people to add strangers or search people near you, such as the Chinese momo, you could search people around you by stating a location. This has lead to many reported rapes and robbery reported in this article.
I think while we diagnose the structure and closeness of networks in class, is also important to know to protect these informtion.
