Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5? Many people around the US are now debating which smart phone to buy. Personally I have a historic phone from 2002 so I am purely neutral on the topic. Samsung as people say, “declared war” on apple when they released a commercial blatantly stating their new product the Samsung Galaxy S3 was better then the over hyped iPhone 5 (which can be watched here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf5-Prx19ZM ). This heated topic reminds me of the “read a good review vs. crowed restaurant” example we went over in class. Buying the Samsung Galaxy S3 is considered to be Information Based and buying the iPhone 5 would be a Direct Benefit Effect.

Information based is when the decision of the buyer conveys some type of information and when there is some decision to be made. Information such as actual reasons why the S3 is better. These could be what is seen in the commercial, the ability to transfer pictures, videos and playlists with simply the touch of two or more phones. These new features is what breaks them out of the iPhone bind their in to move on the the Samsung GS3.

An example of Direct Benefit Effect is when sometimes being part of a crowd has value in itself. This pertains to the Samsung v. iPhone war because people want the iPhone 5 solely to be considered an “iPhone User.” To some, being a part of the culture is very important. It shows this in the commercial when there is an enormous line outside the apple store seven hours before the phone is actually released.

A recent article shown here, http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57525052-94/samsung-galaxy-s3-sales-hot-despite-iphone-5/, shows the sales of each phone. Regardless of the release of the iPhone 5, sales for the GS3 have remained steady. It seems as if the informational based reason to follow a crowd, is more powerful than the direct benefit effect of following a crowd.
