Apple vs. Samsung and Google

The feud between Apple and Samsung began shortly after Google decided to develop the Android mobile operating system. This operating system is featured in some of the devices manufactured by Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC Corp, which are in direct competition with Apple and its iPhone. In addition, Apple and Samsung have both been involved in filing (and are still currently involved in) lawsuits against the other company. One of the major consequences resulting from these feuds significantly affects Apple iPhone consumer.

In the recent iOS 6 software upgrade, featured in the new iPhone 5, two software components that were perviously present are notably absent: YouTube and Google Maps. Apple is confident that it can provide better mapping than Google has provided since the introduction of the first iPhone model in 2007, and intends on continuing to down its relationship with Google. That is why the new mapping software in iOS 6 now uses data from TomTom. Even though Google does have the better mapping application, Apple plans to continue to venture away from Google and continue to develop and improve its own mapping application. Similarly, Google’s YouTube application is no longer preinstalled in iOS 6, as it also has been since the first iPhone model. Now, the YouTube application can be found in the App Store and needs to be downloaded in order to use. This version, however, has drastically changed from the previous version iPhone and iTouch users have come to know.

This relationship/feud best correlates to the idea of weak and strong ties and triadic closure. The relationship between Google and Samsung is a positive one; both companies get along and work together. However, the relationships between Apple and both Google and Samsung are negative, due to the feuds and lawsuits that are currently ensuing. The two negative and one positive edge of the triad make it unbalanced. Therefore, because the triad is unbalanced, it violates the Strong Triadic Closure Property. This unbalanced network is what is leading to the decline in the relationship between Apple and Google and is affecting Apple’s costumers.
