SEO, Page Ranks and Links

Google always has to trade off the balance between authority and hub. If you type in “Viagra” which one of the most spammed terms in the world, you want something that is about Viagra, not just something with a lot of authority like Newsweek or Time that writes an article with mentions the word Viagra even though the article is not necessarily about Viagra. So you DO want authority. You want the sites that are trustworthy and reputable, but you also want topicality. You want the links to the research term to be on topic, or ABOUT what you typed in.

Have a well rounded site. Great content has to be the foundation of any good site because mediocre content tends not to attract exceptional links by itself. Trying to get exceptional links on not so great content will be an uphill battle. A person may have to do things that Google calls “skuzzy” or “bad,” like paying for the links. It is much better to have good content, where you get links naturally so you will have both – great content and great links. The worst one could do is bug people by sending out spam emails and/or asking for links. The best thing to do is to have a well-rounded site by having interesting and useful content – great resources, great information – which naturally attracts the links. As a result, search engines would want to reflect the fact the web thinks you are interesting, important, or helpful.

In class we discussed the number of pages linked to a site is equal to votes. In terms of votes, one would think that the more the better. This is not necessarily true for the numbers of links to or from a website.  The following is what not to do with links and for page rank growth.

  1. Having too many links from a same blog or a forum does not improve your rankings; this practice is often considered as link buying or link spamming. So don’t have more number of links from same blog or websites.
  2. Don’t have more than 100 links per page, Google often talks about this issue but nobody cares!! This practice may often decrease your PR.

Links are really crucial for SEO, in fact webmasters/advertisers give huge Priority to the internal, inbound, out bounded links to your blog or website. Make sure that you have good number of back links from different blogs/websites under your niche but, don’t have too many links to/from the same blog or website as this is often considered as spamming. Links from blogs/Web sites with good PR always helps in increasing your PR; this is often referred as origin of the inbound link. Make sure that you have good number of inbound links from pages with good PR.
