APRIL 24 – A Foundation in Soil: Three Key Properties 

with Jonathan Russell-Anelli, Senior Lecturer & Senior Extension Associate, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences

An introduction to soil texture/mineralogy, organic matter and pH with a discussion of the implications of these properties and their use and management.

 

MAY 29 – Soil Testing for Contaminated Sites

Soil contamination is a whole other topic from normal testing for pH and nutrients. Join staff from the Department of Crop and Soil Science to discuss common contaminants, proper sampling procedures, safety measures, and best management practices.

JULY 31 – Map My Compost! (and other uses for maps)

Part of this year’s Soil & Compost theme will be using a Google Map application to track home composting across the state. This webinar will go over the basics of this system and also offer a basic tutorial on using google maps to make your own maps for education and outreach.

 

AUGUST 28 – It’s all about the Biology: Management for Soil Health

While much of our sampling and testing focuses on understanding the physical and chemical properties of soil, much of management has to do with supporting a healthy soil biology. Join Steve Gabriel for a discussion of organic, ecological, and research-based techniques to improve your soil health.

 

SEPTEMBER 25 – Soil, Compost & Lawns

How does a lawn soil differ from a garden soil? What is the benefit of adding compost to lawns? What are ecological ways to manage our home lawns for health? Join experts from Crop & Soil Science and the Cornell Turf Team to discuss the ins and outs of lawn care.

 

OCTOBER 30 – Putting the bed to rest/Winter compost

This webinar focuses on best management strategies to keep our soils protected and our compost active during the cold winter months.
