Consider this post an early celebration of Ithaca’s Bike to Work Day, May 16th. there will be 10 locations around the city, including 2 on Cornell’s campus, offering free breakfast for those who show up on a bike!

30: bikes available to ride around campus, for free, via Big Red Bikes
$700: cost of each bike + accessories
$13,500: money given to Big Red Bikes from student activity fee
2: years in the planning for Big Red Bikes
100: % of TCAT public buses with bike racks
17,000: bikes that TCAT buses carry per year
9: bike officers in Cornell University Police
5,000: estimated number of bikes that roll around campus every day (vs. 30K pedestrians and 10K cars)

73: Number of patents granted to Cornell University in 2011, with biotechnology being the biggest field.

158: Number of patents granted to Cornell in 2012; 89 in the US and 69 internationally

$9.7MM: 2012 revenue of CCTEC (Cornell Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization), which oversees patenting and research commercialization for the university.

Alumni Engagement Indexes by College – FY ’13, YTD

It’s mid-way through the fiscal year…let’s see how we’re doing with alumni engagement. The Alumni Engagement Index is defined thusly:

(Event attendees + Volunteers + Donors/Duespayers) / Number of mailable, living alumni and non-degreed

These are unique, meaning that if you attend 13 events, volunteer for 4 organizations and give 6 times, you still only count once. For more information on AEI, read this 2-pager.

Last year our total AEI was 30%. This year so far we’re at 25%.

Office of the Provost

Cornell has had 15 Provosts since 1931, when the office was created by the Board of Trustees.

Currently, 22 Vice Provosts and College and Unit Deans report into Provost W.K. (Kent) Fuchs.

The longest-serving Provost is also the only female: Carolyn “Biddy” Martin, who served for 8 years.

5 had degrees from Cornell and all but the first 2 had doctorate degrees.
