Updates

7/22/2011

July 25 – July 27 —  VESDA Pipe noise reduction: There will be additional work on the air sampling system installation at both ends of stack levels 3-7 which will result in muffling the sounds emanating from the wall units. It will require some drilling. We are hoping that this work will only take two days, not three.

Week of July 25 – Paint touch up in stairways: This work will be done after closing.

Week of July 25 – 2nd floor Kitchen Closet: Workers will install a sprinkler head in the closet.

Weeks of Aug and Aug 15 – Drinking fountains: The drinking fountains on the first floor in 110 (west end outside of 111) and the second floor will be removed and replaced with new ones with filters.

Aug 8 – Aug 29 (approximate work span) — Olin/Kroch corridor fire stopping: Prior to the construction of Kroch Library in the early 1990’s, there was a sculpture court where a portion of the Olin side of the corridor is now located.  A roof was constructed over the sculpture court during the Kroch project.  During the fire safety project, we discovered that the sprayed fire-proofing had not adhered to the underside of the roof and had fallen onto the ceiling tiles in the corridor. This has to be repaired.

The remaining fire-proofing has to be removed. New material will be sprayed. The work area will be totally enclosed to help reduce dust, spray smells, fumes and noise. Extra measures will be taken to protect the floor.  Access between Olin and Kroch will be maintained through a tunnel along the south side of the corridor. Not all of the corridor will be part of the work zone, only the portion of the former sculpture court (essentially the area in the corridor where the large windows are located). No doors to office areas on either side will be blocked.

End of September or Early October (exact dates TBD) — 6th floor façade restoration: LeCesse will replace the limestone panels that were removed as part of the façade investigation for the cancelled Olin Renovation Project.

6/23/2011

The project is substantially complete and all floors are open. However, in addition to a number of remaining tasks on the punch list there will continue to be some construction related to project in various parts of the building. Information about that work will be posted once it is available.

6/13/2011

Schedule:
•    Construction continues on the last phase of the project, i.e. the west end of the 2nd floor
•    Anticipated project completion date – Early July, 2011

Additional Related Construction:
•    6th floor façade restoration: LeCesse will replace the limestone panels that were removed as part of the façade investigation for the cancelled Olin Renovation Project. The restoration work was added to the Fire Safety Project. More information, including the schedule, will be posted when it is available.

•    Olin/Kroch corridor fire stopping: Prior to the construction of Kroch Library in the early 1990’s, there was a sculpture court where a portion of the Olin side of the corridor is now located. A roof was constructed over the sculpture court during the Kroch project. During the current project, we discovered that the fire stopping had not adhered to the roof and had fallen onto the ceiling tiles in the corridor. This has to be fixed.  More information, including the schedule, will be posted when it is available.

As of Tuesday, April 26, all of the staff from the 2nd floor Phase 11 & 12 impending construction areas has moved to temporary locations. Ask at the Olin circulation or reference desks for all staff currently in temporary locations.

Please note that beginning Thursday, April 28, access to the staff located in the temporary surge space on the 2nd floor will be circuitous:

  • Although both public elevators will be in operation at all times, only one will permit access to the second floor.
  • While both stairways will be open to all floors, the second floor will not be accessible via the west (Uris/front entrance side) stairway.
  • The recommended access will be via the east stairway near the entrance to Kroch Library and across from the 106 suite.
  • From May 6 until the week of June 23, access to the 2nd floor surge space will be through a tunnel from the elevator.
  • Directional signs will be posted at key points, but do not hesitate to ask for directions.

On Wednesday, April 27, there will be a Fire Alarm Test at 8:00-8:30 am. Before the test there will be an announcement of the imminent test. This is not a fire drill. There is no need to evacuate the building during these announced tests of the new alarms. There will also be an announcement when the test is over.

On Friday, April 29, the 4th floor will open.

3/17/2011

The project will take advantage of the Spring Break window when our libraries experience less use by students and faculty to do some necessary out of phase and somewhat disruptive construction in public areas.

  • During the week of March 21, workers will remove the drinking fountain between the two restrooms in the basement and put in a new installation. The current plan should not impede the circulation path in the hallway.
  • Starting Friday, March 18 through Friday, March 25 workers will install a new sprinkler feed and smoke heads in the Olin/Kroch corridor. Work will take place in the middle of the corridor. We have been assured of five foot circulation pathways for the public and staff on both sides of the corridor. Entrances to staff areas will not be blocked. We have also been assured of barriers to separate the pathways from the construction area. However, this work will be very noticeable.
  • During the week of March 21, workers will disconnect the existing sprinkler feed from Kroch to Olin in the Olin/Kroch corridor. This work will be done early in the morning before opening.
  • During the week of March 21, workers will remove the temporary entrance on the north side of the building.
  • During the week of March 21, workers will be doing miscellaneous duct related work in the basement on the compact shelving end.

12/6/10

“Off hours” work has been scheduled in preparation for the first floor construction phases that will begin at the end of exams. Starting at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, workers will construct a temporary entrance and ramp on the north side of the building in the reference reading room just to the east of the Café. This temporary entrance will be necessary in order to close the front entrance on December 17 to accommodate construction in that location of the building. Workers will also put up one of the first floor construction barriers at this time. Impacted reference collections have already been moved to the south wall proximate to the compact shelving in the basement.

————————————————————

11/18/10

The 6th floor of Olin Library will open on Friday, November 19, at 8 a.m. Collections (call numbers A, F, and P-PG) will be accessible immediately at opening. Access to the west-end seminar and graduate student rooms is expected early next week after the painters have finished in those rooms and we have moved the furniture back from storage. The 5th floor (call numbers D-E) remains closed as construction continues on that floor. Construction also continues in the 1st floor 106 office suite. Temporary locations for all relocated staff during the project is available at the Olin circulation and reference desks.

Also, this Friday, there will be activity outside the building as workers lay asphalt for a path to a temporary entrance that will be constructed on the north side of the building, just to the east of the Cafe. This temporary entrance will be necessary in order to close the front entrance to the building on December 17 to accommodate the first phase of construction in the public areas on the 1st floor. Those of you who were at Cornell in 2005 may remember that we successfully created a temporary entrance in this same location because another Olin project necessitated closing the front entrance.

Stay tuned for details regarding the 1st floor construction plans.

————————————————————

11/11/10

Construction on the first floor will begin this coming Monday, November 15, in the 106 Olin/Uris Administration and Research and Learning office suite and classroom. In preparation, all staff currently located in 106 will move to one of the three Olin locations (107, 107A, 218/229, 701) Thursday, November 11 and Friday, November 12. Location information for a specific individual is available at the Circulation and Reference desks.

The contractor erected scaffolding in the stair 2 (east end/Stimson end) staircase at the 7th floor level in order to do some essential code related work. The goal is to complete the work and take down the scaffolding by the end Friday, November 12. Therefore, access to the 7th floor through Friday is only from the west end (Uris end) of the building either by stair 1 or the public elevator. However, stair 2 is available for emergency access at all times.

Upcoming tests:

Friday, November 12, 8:00 – 10:00am – Fire Pump test

  • Activity will be noticeable in the front of the building to the south of the front doors, in the area of odd looking fire hydrant (also known as the “Siamese” connection or “test header” for the sprinkler system).
  • Cornell EH&S, City, Contractor & Cornell Project representatives will be present throughout the process.
  • Hoses will be hooked up to the fire hydrant, the “test header”,  and water will be discharged to confirm that the pump is operating correctly – many construction and Cornell staff will supervise this process.
  • The emergency generator will come on during the test to confirm that the pump has been correctly wired to the generator. We have been assured that it will not affect power in Olin.

Tuesday, November 16, 8:00 – 8:30 am – Fire alarm test

  • The new fire alarms on the 6th floor will be tested. This means that all of the other new fire alarms – sub basement, basement, second floor, 7th floor  – will also sound. As installations in each phase are tested the horns that were installed in the previous phases will also sound.
  • Before the test there will be an announcement of the imminent test. There will also be an announcement when the test is over.

————————————————————

11/1/10
