Maps and Media

The Maps and Media user services will be relocating as part of the Olin FSP.  The move is scheduled for June 8-9, 2010. The area is expected to re-open in late July, 2010.

Maps
During the construction period, the Maps collection will be closed off to patrons and materials will be paged. Patrons can request maps at the temporary Maps and Media Services Desk in the lower level reading area, or at the Circulation Desk in Olin. They will receive an e-mail when a map is ready for viewing (next business day at the very earliest) and will be able to view it under staff supervision on a specially designated table on the lower level. Map scanning is going to be available in smaller formats only by using the Printing Center scanners on the 1st floor of Olin.

For questions, please contact Boris Michev, Maps and Geospatial Librarian, at bm19, or send an e-mail to olinmaps@cornell.edu.

Media
The bulk of the collection (all DVDs and VHS) will be moved to the lower level reading room area in Olin Library and will be freely accessible to patrons. Some sound recordings will not be moved and we’ll make every effort possible to page them on request. To facilitate in-house use, we’ll move two video stations to Uris Library, and relocate one to the lower level of Olin Library.

While the microfiche and microfilm collections remain accessible to the public in this phase, the microfilm reader/printers area will be closed off. We will move two microfilm reader/printers to another area of the lower level. Venda cards for non-netprint users can be purchased in the Printing Center on the 1st floor of Olin Library.

For help, ask at the temporary Maps and Media Services Desk. It will be staffed during normal business hours. After hours, please contact the Circulation Desk in Olin Library.

As floors or portions of floors become inaccessible to the public for a period of approximately 8 weeks, there will be changes in the user spaces and services we provide. Here are the most important ones:

  1. Faculty studies and graduate carrels on all floors under construction will be inaccessible for the duration of the phase (~ 8 weeks each) and we’ll be working with the faculty and graduate students on how to accommodate that. The Kirby Room in Uris will be used to accommodate displaced faculty and graduate students, if there are no other options.
  2. Various public services points will have to be relocated when their areas are under construction and we’ll be announcing these each time they occur.
  3. For the duration of the project (slated to be completed by the end of 2011), we will not be able to accommodate regularly scheduled classes taught by faculty.
  4. Again, for the duration of the project, no graduate reading room reserves will be placed in the rooms. Instead, they will be at the circulation desk in Uris (or Olin during the summer).
